![]() ![]() There’s one mission type where this isn’t the case, however. Not All Mission Types Require Extractionĭuring the first few missions of the game you’ll be required to move to a location after completing an objective and extract. If you manage to make a locust stagger back and fall into the emergence hole, they’ll die immediately. Explosives can do this, of course, but Heavy gunners can do the same with some of their perks. There are a few skills in the game which allow your soldiers to knock enemies back. You Can Knock Locusts Back in Their Holes While there are drawbacks during the deployment, namely a decreased health maximum, nothing will follow you back to base. As long as a soldier doesn’t die, there are no real penalties for getting shot or for getting downed. After all, it can make a big difference in games like XCOM. Once again, you may be conditioned towards hating when soldiers are wounded. There Are No Long-Lasting Penalties for Being Wounded You don’t have to take up all three action points before moving onto the next available unit. That includes alternating moves or attacks between multiple characters. Though the game automatically gives you control of a Gear when your turn starts, you can take actions in any order that you want. If things get too out of hand, there’s even a button in the menu to restart the entire act! You Can Move Out of Turn Order Unlike XCOM where defeat means defeat, Gears will simply prompt you you to restart mission or try again from the from the latest checkpoint. Gears Tactics is largely a linear, story-based tactical strategy game. Remember that they’ll still melee you if you attempt to move! Shoot them with any of your troops before attempting to reposition. That includes pesky Wretches who will stand next to one of your soldiers and just pass. These Locusts will just move into their most favorable position and wait until the next round. While Locusts from emergence holes can come after you right away, the same can’t be said for enemies that drop from overhead Reavers. Air-Dropped Enemies Can’t Attack Right Away Enemies that crawl out are able to attack immediately! Characters on overwatch can interrupt their charge and end their turn early. This is especially handy when it comes to emergence holes. If you have nothing else to do, don’t be afraid to stick your Gears on overwatch. Use Overwatch Liberally, Especially with Emergence Holes The second it opens, the grenade will detonate, collapsing the hole and killing all of the Locusts inside. If you have a Scout, however, use their proximity mine ability! It’ll place a motion triggered explosive on the hole. Grenades, at least for low level characters, have a five turn cooldown and you’ll likely just lose if you can’t close that initial emergence hole fast enough. Especially that early on, it could mean you have to restart. Don’t waste a grenade during the tutorial like I did. Don’t try and throw a grenade at it just yet! You can’t close emergence holes before they’re fully open. The camera will pan over to the location and show the ground starting to crack. When the Locust decide to open an emergence hole, you’re forewarned of it in advance. You Have to Wait to Close Emergence Holes, Unless Using Proximity Mines The only similarities are the gameplay and the roster management. There’s no basebuilding, or scouring the planet to complete side quests before the main story continues. While you get the choice between a few different missions multiple times throughout the game, that’s just about all there is to it. Hopefully this is something you’ve discovered before you purchased the title, at least if that was an assumption you were making. Here are some Gears Tactics tips with a focus on things the game doesn’t tell you. Gears Tactics is no exception, especially with this being new territory for the third-person, cover-based shooter franchise. Regardless of how familiar you are with tactical strategy games, there are always a few things that will likely trip you up in each title. ![]()
